Amy Laoshi is an experienced Mandarin educator with the following credentials:
- National Taiwan Normal University – M.A. in Teaching Mandarin as a Second Language
- Nanjing University, College of Overseas Education – M.A. in International Chinese Education
- Chung Yuan Christian University – B.A. in Applied Chinese Language and Literature
- Chung Yuan Christian University – Secondary Education Program in Chinese Literature
With a passion for teaching children and teenagers, Amy makes learning fun and engaging by incorporating creative activities and cultural elements into her lessons. She currently teaches National Conditions and Culture at Nanjing University’s College of Overseas Education and has previously taught Mandarin in Japan, Indonesia, Thailand, and China.

Laura Laoshi – Visiting Instructor from Taiwan

Laura Laoshi is an experienced Mandarin educator with the following credentials:
- National Tsing Hua University – Graduate Institute of Sinophone Studies
- Chung Yuan Christian University – B.A. in Applied Chinese Language and Literature
Specializing in teaching children and teenagers, she creates engaging lessons using games, storytelling, drama, and cultural activities to build strong skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Her interactive approach helps students naturally develop confidence in using Mandarin in daily life.
She currently teaches Mandarin Reading and Writing at Taiwan Shishuo Chinese Education and develops curricula at Top International Education. Her past experience includes teaching at Tamkang University Chinese Language Center and Xiaolisheng Bilingual School.

What’s the summer camp weekly curriculum?

Where at Congregation Ner Tamid will the camp be held? What outdoor space will be used?
Classes will be held on the 2nd floor of the Congregation Ner Tamid with access to their playground. Main entrance is located Irving & Lenore Levine Education Center around the back of the main round building.


How will campers be grouped? How many classes will there be?
Two teachers will be present at all times. Campers will be grouped by age and Mandarin proficiency.
Will lunch and snacks be provided?
No, we will not be providing lunch and snacks with the exception of cooking class days. Please provide your camper with your own lunch and snacks.
NOTE: Meals and snacks brought by campers to Congregation Ner Tamid must adhere to Kosher dietary laws per the mandatory South Bay Chinese School Summer Camp agreement that parents must sign. Congregation Ner Tamid requests campers to bring meals and snacks that are:
- Vegetarian
- Fish
- Fish must have fins and scales (please avoid fish mentioned in this list of non-Kosher fish)
- No shellfish
- Labeled with any “Kosher” or “Pareve” symbols (e.g. KSA)
- Please refer to this list of Kosher and Pareve symbols
- Examples of acceptable foods and snacks:
- Bagels
- Cereal and milk
- Cornbread
- Eggrolls – vegetarian or vegan
- Eggs
- English muffins
- French toast
- Granola
- Mac and cheese (vegetarian or vegan)
- Muffin
- Pancakes
- Potato wedges

On field trip days, meals and snacks do not need to adhere to Kosher dietary laws. These food items will be stored in a cooler on site but cannot be consumed on the Congregation Ner Tamid property.
Is this a Mandarin immersion camp? Will any English be spoken?
Mandarin will be the primary language spoken and teachers will make every attempt to speak only Mandarin and encourage children to speak Mandarin. However, if absolutely needed for communication or if needed to help students speak Mandarin, English will be used. It will be up to the teacher’s discretion.
Will Cantonese be taught at the summer camp?
No, the camp will be held in Mandarin Chinese. However, we will consider offering a Cantonese summer camp if there is enough interest and Cantonese instructors are available.
